“‘Go,’ said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.” (Mark 10:52 NIV)

There were many in the crowd that day, but only blind Bartimaeus was touched and healed; and it happened in an instant.  Though Jesus was the one who healed him, he told Bartimaeus that it was his faith that had made him whole.  And so it is that faith—not in faith itself, but in Jesus Christ—can bring about a miracle in our lives, and it can happen in an instant!

Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside begging when Jesus passed by with a large crowd of people following him.  The people were listening to Jesus and some among them were, perhaps, even analyzing his words.  But whether or not he had heard about all the miracles that Jesus was doing, Bartimaeus was the only one who reached out in faith to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  And when he was told it was not the politically correct or respectful thing to do, something inside him caused him to shout all the more!  And it got the attention of Jesus, who asked him, “What do you want me to do?”  What a question!  Bartimaeus knew what he needed, told it to Jesus, and received healing that day.

There were undoubtedly others in the crowd who were in need of a touch from Jesus for their own difficult situations, but they did not have the faith to reach out to him for what they needed.  Faith always reaches out, no matter how inconvenient it may seem at the time, no matter how dire the situation, no matter who is trying to stop us from believing that all things are possible with God.

Today, Jesus still asks, “What do you want me to do?”  Bartimaeus reached out in faith, and so can we.  And whatever it is that we are facing in life can change— in an instant!
