Leadership in the kingdom of God begins with the call of God. Throughout Scripture we see God calling ordinary people to lead His people: Moses, Joshua, David, the disciples, and Paul. Leadership is not about ambition, position, or recognition. It is about answering the call of God to serve, to guide, and to multiply disciples.
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – Matthew 4:19
At Gateway, leadership is discipleship multiplied. Leaders stay close to Jesus, set an example, and help others take their next steps with Him.
Before stepping into leadership, we ask that you are growing in your walk with Christ, committed to the life of the church, and connected in community. Leadership is not about status or position, but about becoming more like Jesus and helping others follow Him. This could mean leading a small group, discipling one person, or carrying responsibility for a ministry team.
We believe every leader is first called by God, then shaped through discipleship, and released by the Spirit to serve. That is why our leadership pathway helps you grow step by step:
Every leadership journey begins with serving. This is where God shapes humility, consistency, and a heart for others. By serving faithfully you build trust and create a foundation for everything that comes next.
Leaders are formed through discipleship. In this stage you grow in character, deepen your walk with Jesus, and begin developing the gifts He has given you. This is preparation for leading others well.
At this stage you step into greater responsibility under the guidance of leaders. It is a time of learning to build healthy discipleship and ministry environments while remaining dependent on God.
The goal of leadership is multiplication. Here you invest in others, make disciples, and raise up leaders who will do the same. This is how the church grows stronger and the mission of Jesus advances.
Leadership is not something we take on for ourselves, it is something recognised and confirmed by the church. As you grow in discipleship and faithfulness, the call of God is confirmed by church leadership, and you are released to serve in the power of the Spirit. Leadership is never the end of the pathway, but the beginning of someone else’s. As you lead like Jesus, your life helps others start their journey of following Him.
This is the heart of discipleship: following Jesus, belonging to His family, growing in faith, serving others, sharing the good news, and leading others to do the same.
The journey does not end, it multiplies.
